The New York International Auto Show would soon be opening its doors for the public and during that event, the organizers of the 2008 World Car of the Year awards are also working harder than ever. The Auto Channel mentioned that during the mentioned auto show on March 20th, the WCOTY awards winners would be announced.

47 automotive journalists from all around the world were the judges and they were the ones who selected who among the lot of vehicles in the market today would be joining the list of finalists. In choosing which of the vehicles would claim a spot in the top ten, these journalists put in their votes via secret ballots. Each of the judges had spent some time with the vehicles and assessed the vehicles. These judges come with good reputations as experts in the industry.

Gerry Malloy is the co-chair for the WCOTY awards and he stated, Announcing the annual World Car of the Year awards at the New York show is a fitting finale to the auto show season that begins each fall with either the Paris or Frankfurt motor shows. Next, it's on to Tokyo in alternating years. The Detroit and Geneva shows take center stage early in the year. Finally, in March, the season reaches its exciting climax at the New York International Auto Show.

For the main award, the World Car of the Year, the votes were tallied and they were able to take the top ten. The list had two vehicles each from Audi, Ford, and Nissan. These were the Audi A5 Coupe / Audi S5 Coupe and the Audi R8; the Ford Mondeo and S-Max; and the Nissan Qashqai/Dualis, and the Nissan Skyline Coupe / Infiniti G37 Coupe. These are joined by the Cadillac CTS, Mazda 2 / Mazda Demio, Mercedes Benz C-Class, and the Volvo C30.

Two Audi units and three Mercedes Benz vehicles made it to the top ten finalists for the 2008 World Performance Car award. The Audi R8 and S5 Coupe joined the lot as well as the Mercedes Benz CLK 63 AMG Black Series, AMG S 63 and the CL 63. Completing the top ten are the Aston Martin V8 Vantage Roadster, BMW M3, Honda Civic R, Maserati GranTurismo, and the Renault Clio F1 Team R27. It can be noted that no GMC parts -bearing vehicle made it to the list.
