A "rough" guide to bars in the City of Murcia.

Going out to bars in Murcia is a learning experience if you're English. Whilst you can still go out the old fashioned English way (Go out at 8.00p.m. and be home in bed at 1.00a.m. the worse for
wear) it's more interesting to try to be 'continental' in Murcia. Most places in Murcia don't liven up until around 1.00a.m. so you'll miss a lot of action if you're in bed too early.

Here's a useful tip: To get the best out of your night out in Murcia change your body timer to a Spanish night out by altering your watch by an hour. Don't consider going to a "proper" Murcia bar before 11pm. Before that, if you want to be around the place why not have a coffee in Plaza Cardenal Belluga (next to the Cathedral) and admire the floodlit Cathedral. from the terrace. You could then walk to the Hotel Rincon de pepe (Apostoles, 34) for a cocktail in the "La Muralla" cocktail bar, one of the few places in Murcia where you can still see the remains of the city's original Arab walls.

Here's a few of some of the bars in Murcia.

Mestizo (14 Doctor Fleming.) Cool friendly caf during the day but in the evenings it becomes a lively bar. Buzzing atmosphere later as opposed to relaxed earlier in the evening..

Bar Warhol (25 Calle Victorio.) Cool place for those of you into Pop Art with copies of the Velvet Underground mentor's
pictures on most walls. A fairly cool gaff that's nice for a quiet chat and drink. One of the coolest bars in Murcia.

Drexco (26 Trapera.) Nice place near Murcia's Cathedral for non alcoholic drinks and coffee. They claim to have the biggest choice of coffee in Murcia with beans from all over the planet. Open 'til 1.00am with chilled out music and atmosphere.

El Albergue (19 Calle Vara de Rey.) This place is open until 3, serves cocktails and has real music on a Tuesday. It's popular with the younger crowd and it gets packed at the weekend.

Hermanos Rubio (3 Plaza Santa Isabel.) An old fashioned tapas bar not far from the cathedral in the heart of the City. If you order a sherry here they'll think you're a local.

La Bulla (Calle Montijo.) One of several Cuban style bars in Murcia serving mainly cocktails. Stays open till 3am.

El Bolo (29 Calle Vara del Rey.) Well chilled bar in the centre of the Old Town right in the party area. You can see live concerts on Tuesdays and they have cocktail features on Fridays and Saturdays. A good bar to start your evening, then return for a drink later chill out.

Guanbana Jam (6 Plaza Cermica.) A new club with stage and bars primarilly showing live jazz, blues and soul. On Tues & Wed it's open till 1.00, while Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays carry on later till 3....

Zanzibar (3 Calle Andres Baquero.) Here we have a busy small bar where you can get just about every kind of drink you could ask for. Inside you'll find punters relaxing with anything from a milkshake to a cocktail. Happy hour is on Wednesdays from 9-11pm where the old two for one applies.

Itaca (7 Calle Mariano Vergara. Tel. 968 934 922) Again this is near the university. Quite an unusual bar in that it's both bookshop and a bar. Frequented by local students having coffee during the day, then in the evening a more mature crowd arrive to blast away at the cocktails. Mojitos are the most popular drink.

B12 (17 Calle Trinidade.) A trendy bar but fairly quiet early on in the evening. Nice place to grab an early drink to start the evening.

Josepe (9 Arquitecto Emilio Piero.) This is an excellent tapas bar that stays open all day. There are lots of nostalgic past paintings and photographs of Murcia around the place. Try a pan con tomate and a sherry in the early evening for a change before your meal. This is usually one of the first bars in Murcia I call in..

That just about covers it for article 1 on bars in Murcia City. There's a few to go at anyway.. Should you go to any other Murcia clubs that you think deserve a mention then email me and let me have details. Cheers!!
