Freeware is copyrighted computer software which is made available for use free of charge, for an unlimited time. Authors of freeware often want to "give something to the community", but also want credit for their software and to retain control of its future development. The term freeware was coined by Andrew Fluegelman when he wanted to sell a communications program named PC-Talk that he had created but for which he did not wish to use traditional methods of distribution because of their cost. The only criterion for being classified as "freeware" is that the software must be made available for use for an unlimited time at no cost. " Everything created with the freeware programs can be distributed at no cost (for example graphic, documents, or sounds made by user). There is some software which may be considered freeware, but which has limited distribution; that is, it may only be downloaded from a specific site, and cannot be redistributed. According to the basic definition, that software would be freeware; according to stricter definitions, it wouldn't be. The term 'freeware' may include public domain software and proprietary software.

However, the differences in extension of thec ategory are small: nearly all free software is open source, andnearly all open source software is free. Meanwhile, most free software is not in the public domain; it is copyrighted, and the copyright holders have legally given permission for everyone to use it in freedom, using a free software license. This means that every copy of the software, even if it has been modified, must be free software. Semi-free software is software that is not free, but comes with permission for individuals to use, copy, distribute, and modify (including distribution of modified versions) for non-profit purposes. Semi-free software is much better ethically than proprietary software, but it still poses problems, and we cannot use it in a free operating system. Shareware is not free software, or even semi-free. A private program is free software in a trivial sense if its unique user has full rights to it.

However, freeware does not include such loss leaders as crippleware, adware, shareware or demoware, where there is hidden cost to be paid to use the software. Real freeware must never self-cripple, expire, nag, cajole, advertise, or confront the user with any content not related to the function of the program. Users of freeware must not forget that they didn't pay for the software, and therefore they cannot demand the satisfaction of an imaginary contract between the programmer and themselves. Shareware is good, but freeware is even better.
